A pianist with astounding technique and boundless imagination, Alex Mercado is acclaimed for his ability to write striking compositions and create vibrant sonic landscapes.
The classically trained Mercado, who only started to play jazz at aged 17, he studied for a period at the prestious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he refined his craft.
A big jazz star in his native Mexico, Mercado first came to international attention with the release of his second trio album ‘Symbiosis’ in 2014. Featuring fellow countryman, drummerAntonio Sanchez (responsible for the award-winning soundtrack to last year’s hit movie ‘Birdman’) and New York bass player Scott Colley, the album was chosen by Downbeat Magazine editors as one of their picks of that year.
A virtuoso pianist who is the player of choice many of the country’s leading musicians, including Magos Merrera, Sachal Vasandani, Mercado was commissioned in 2010 to arrange and perform as the featured soloist in the orchestral opening of Sir Elton John’s concert with the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra.
His solo piano concert at Bray Jazz Festival will open this year’s festival at ‘The Well’ (formerly St. Paul’s Church) at Bray Main Street.
